Today started the celebration of Preston's 2nd birthday. Yes, SECOND!! I can hardly believe it! I mean, it seems like yesterday I was writing these blog posts. Crazy! So much has happened in these crazy 2 years but Preston has filled our home with so much joy.
Preston, you are definitely all boy. You love to run, play rough, act like animals and play with your brothers. You are full of smiles all the time. You light up a room the second you come in. You have learned very early how to use your cuteness to get what you want. I simply cannot resist it when you give me your pouty eyes and use the sign for please and tilt your head down. It gets me every single time. You are definitely more challenging than your older brother but I wouldn't change it for anything. I love you so much and I love watching you grow and learn.
We started this weekend with a visit to the circus. We were supposed to go 2 years ago but you decided to surprise us a couple of weeks early so Grandma and Pappa got to take Carter while we were in the hospital. We then drove around a little bit and showed Carter his first home he lived in for 5 months. We ate lunch at Corner Bakery and then went to the library to turn in your reading logs. You LOVE to read. You would sit there all day long and let someone read books to you. Afterwards, we went back into Dallas and met up with Alyssa, Chris, and Isabelle at Cheesecake Factory. We had a fun filled day and have more to come this weekend.

Sick
It seems like with a family of five someone is always sick. I long for the day when all five of us are healthy at the same time! :) John has another sinus infection. This is like his third one in the past two months. He is back on antibiotics and some steroids. Preston had a stomach bug on Friday and now on Sunday Carter has it. Preston only thew up a couple of times and acted completely fine in between. Carter started throwing up right after dinner and hasn't stopped. Since about 7 tonight he has thrown up at least 7 times. It is now 10:00 and he just fell asleep. I pray that noone else gets this. I am doing my best in sanitizing everything and washing and washing and washing.

Silkie
John and I go in and check on the boys everynight before we go to bed. Carter has this habit of putting his silkies into his pullup which causes a problem as he still wets his pull up most nights. So, we go in and make sure that he hasn't done that or take them out if he has. Well, the other night I went in to check on him and this is what I found...

Halloween 2009
Halloween was a lot of fun this year! I have had a fireman costume for Carter since he was born and it was going to finally fit him this year. However, he had different plans. He actually had an opinion on what he wanted to be. He wanted to be a bumble bee. I think he got the idea from one of his friends at school. Well, it turns out his friend wanted to be Bumble Bee from the movie Transformers. Carter has never seen Transformers nor will he for quite a few more years but he had his heart set on an actual bumble bee. So, I went on a hunt for a bumble bee costume that wasn't too babyish and wasn't made for a girl. I finally found one at Target and got one in his size and one in Preston's size. They were the cutest bumble bees! Liam went dressed as a ghost. I have an infant bee costume but it was too hot for him to wear it.
We started the festivities with Trunk or Treat at our church. It was the first time for us to go to anything at church since Lian was born. So, it was nice to see everyone and for people to meet him. Carter and Preston certainly got their share of attention too. Carter would tell people that he really wasn't a bee it was just a costume for Halloween. So cute!
After the Trunk or Treat we headed back to our house with MiMi and Ken. John and I took Carter and Preston trick or treating down our street while MiMi stayed home with Liam and passed out candy. Preston walked the whole way and his little legs were tired by the end of our block. He loved every minute of it though.

Bath Time
Bath time is one of the boys favorite things to do, except for Liam. Liam hates the bath and cries during most of it. Carter and Preston take their bath together and have a great time playing.

First Steps
At 13 months old, Preston is officially walking. He has been taking steps here and there for about a month but on Sunday (9/6/09) night he took off. He always paces back and forth while holding onto the couch. Well, the other night he got to the end of the couch and just kept going. I was in such shock I couldn't even say anything. I just looked over to John and started pointing. He made it half way across the living room until he fell down. He is so proud. He holds his little hands up in the air in a fist to be sure not to hold on but he knows he can catch himself if he needs to. I am so proud too! What a big boy!

Finally, We Can Play Outside
Now that the weather is cooling down a little bit we actually got to go outside and play in the backyard. John and Carter went out this afternoon while Preston was napping and then we all went out after dinner. This was the first time for Preston to play on the new playset and he LOVED the swing. I was actually shocked at how high he wanted to go. The higher we went the harder he laughed. Carter pushed him for a little bit but was a little rough. I was scared that Preston was going to get whip lash but he loved every minute of it. Carter played with balls and loved throwing them up the slide and watching them slide down and loved just throwing them up in the air. John helped Preston slide down our little slide that Aunt Shannon got Carter last year but he wasn't so sure about that.

A Good Day
We have been having quite a few rough days lately so it is so nice to report such a good day. Granted, it's only 3:30 but usually by this time I am completely ready for John to be home. The day started very early as Preston woke up early. We all got up and had breakfast and were in the car and on our way to a park by 9. We met some friends from our local Wylie Mom's group. Carter was excited because the train park is one of his favorite parks to go to. I don't really get it because it seems like it would be boring as it is just a train with no moving parts but the kid loves trains!
The train park is part of our outdoor mall. So while we were there, we walked over to the Stride Rite store and returned a couple of shoes I had gotten for Preston. I had found some super cute shoes at the Stride Rite outlet and figured I would save a little bit of money. We also went into the Carter's store to see if they had gotten any of their "Big Brother" t-shirts in. They only had long sleeved and the smallest size they had was 3T, which isn't going to fit Preston. I need to order the ones I designed for the boys. They are really cute.
We then loaded back into the minivan and were headed home. I needed a few things from the grocery store and I figured I wouldn't want to get back out so we went ahead and stopped at Kroger. Both boys were so good!
We came home and ate lunch and for the first time both boys went down for nap with only a few tears and I only had to make one trip in there to rescue a pacifier. While searching for said pacifier I hit the outside of my eye on the crib and bruised it. The crib is nowhere close to childproof from the outside as it is 30 something years old and there is a metal piece sticking out that I so gracefully bumped into.
I am hoping that the rest of the day and evening go as smoothly and maybe, just maybe I can get out to go get a pedicure that I so desperately need!

Another Round of Ear Infections
Preston has been fussy for a day or two and has had a very runny nose (still clear though). This morning he started tugging on his ears, so I figured we needed to head to the doctor again. Dr. Morchower didn't have any openings but Dr. Henderson did. She is so calm and gentle that we got through the whole appointment without any tears!! John met me there to help since Carter is still having trouble with the whole listening thing. There was fluid on both of his ears and more on the left one than the right one. She said it was very borderline but enough to write another prescription for antibiotics. She wants to see him in two weeks to check on it.
I talked to her about how this is his third or fourth ear infection and when should we start to be concerned. She said it is hard to put an exact number on it. She said that a lot of it depends on the frequency and how well he responds to antibiotics before referring us to an ENT. I explained how I suffered from ear infections as a kid and our nephews have had numerous ear infections. She agreed that part of it could be hereditary and some of it could also be from allergies. He is too young to try allergy medications so... She said that we will see how the fall goes but I personally think at this point two double ear infections within weeks of each other is a little excessive. If he has one more soon, then I am going to request to see an ENT.
I am thankful, though, that we caught this one early before it got too bad. Hopefully he will be feeling like himself tomorrow.

1 Year Old Check Up
I took Preston today to see Dr. Morchower for his 1 year old check up. He weighs 19.3 pounds (25th-50th percentile) and is 29 1/2 inches (50th-75th percentile). His eye sight and hearing was perfect and the doctor seemed pleased with everything.
We talked a lot about how to help Preston adjust to the new baby and all of the changes that are happening in our family. I am very worried how Preston is going to react to the new baby. He is very much a momma's boy and when he is upset, he only wants me. Granted, he doesn't really know any different. I am the one that has taken care of him for the past year. Yes, John takes care of him but Carter has been John's main focus this year since I nursed Preston and gave him his baths and etc. Even with bottle feeding for the past 6 months, I am the one that gives him his bottle. So, Dr. Morchower's advice was to have John do more with Preston for the next few weeks so he gets used to someone else. He was pleased to hear that I enrolled Preston in MDO in the fall. He said it would be better to do two days a week instead of one day a week but we are having a hard time affording one day. He thinks MDO will be very good for him to become a little more independent. Dr. M told me that Preston is going to be the epitome of the Middle Child Syndrome, given his age. I wanted to start crying right there. The last thing I want is for my child to have the middle child syndrome. I don't want to overcompensate and give him more attention but how do I find that balance?
Dr. M could tell my anxieties -- he has known me since I was a newborn. He reassured me that they were there for me, even it was to provide me with a glass of wine. lol He reassured me that I would survive and would do a great job. He reminded me that they were just a phone call away.
We also addressed Preston's temper. I don't think I have mentioned the temper that my sweet little boy has but man does he have a temper. He is getting to that age that he is starting to hear the word "no" and we redirect him but he gets extremely upset. He has recently started hitting me in the face if I'm holding him and he doesn't get what he wants. Dr. M told me to not react to him and simply put him down if I am holding him. He told me to redirect his anger at something other than me. How do you teach a 12/13 month old to be gentle???
After our lengthy conversation, the nurse came in and gave Preston his shots. He got the regular 1 year old shots with the exception of the MMR vaccination. I decided to delay that one until 15 months. He is only scheduled to get 1 shot at 15 months so I am grouping that one with the MMR.
Dr. Morchower gave me a hug on our way out and said he would see me in a few weeks with Baby Boy #3!

Happy 1st Birthday, Preston!
My baby is officially one year old! I cannot believe how fast this past year has flown by. Preston has added so much fun to our household. He is full of personality and loves to laugh. At one year old, he is crawling, pulling up on things, walking around while holding on, babbles all day long, can say DaDa and Night Night (sometimes MaMa and Bubba), has started to eat table food, has 8 teeth (4 top - 4 bottom).

We celebrated his birthday on Saturday, August 1st. Grandma, Papa, Mimi and Ken, Poppy and Mary, Uncle Chris, Aunt Kari and Cousin Kendall, Courtney, Steven and Preston's girlfriend, Samantha came over to help celebrate. He got a ton of toys and clothes and even a little bit of money to add to his college savings!
The party started off with pizza. Preston had never had pizza before but he LOVED it! He ate almost two full pieces of cheese pizza. I didn't think we were ever going to get him full and get to move on to the presents. But he finally either got full or just got tired of eating!
Next, we opened all of the presents. His big brother, Carter, helped until he wanted to just play with all of the new toys. He got a tractor, care bear, clothes, a book, a fun pull toy that has a shape sorter with music and many many other things.
Then he got to eat his first birthday cake! He never did get into the actual cake but he thought the icing was pretty tasty. I got his cakes from Willie Mae's bakery in Plano. They were so yummy! They did such a great job at matching the cakes to his invitations, too!
After a few hours of partying Preston was definitely one worn out little boy. It was such a fun day and we can't wait until his next birthday. We are so fortunate to have friends and family around to help us celebrate such special days like this one!

First Official Word (besides DaDa, MaMa, and Bubba)
Preston has been saying "Dada" for a little bit now. When John walks out of the room, Preston will call for him. He has also randomly said Mama and Bubba (brother) but not very consistently. Well, on Wednesday, I picked him up to put him down for his afternoon nap and Carter said "night night" to him and Preston repeated it back! Now he says it all of the time. It is the one word he will repeat without fail.

Double Ear Infection
Poor Preston! As soon as he was completely over the stomach bug he got an ear infection in both ears! His nose has been runny since last weekend but I just figured it was because of teething. Yesterday morning, he woke up with blood all over his ear. It really freaked me out but after I cleaned it with a wipe I could tell it was just from him scratching his ear and it wasn't coming from inside. I decided to just watch him yesterday but as the day went on he started pulling and tugging on his cheek and he had a rough time going to sleep. He isn't fussy nor running a fever. He is playing just like he always does. I took him in this morning and sure enough both ears are infected.
Carter was so cute. I had told him we were going to go to the grocery store but on our way I found out that the doctor could see us immediately so I told Carter we were just going to see the doctor and not go to the store yet. He was okay with it until five minutes later. He then said, "Mommy, why don't we just go to Kroger and then go home and I will get my doctor kit out. I will be Dr. Carter and I will look at Preston." I had to tell him that he was a great doctor but we better see Dr. Morchower first and then after lunch and nap he could be Dr. Carter and look at Preston. Carter loves to go to the doctor when it isn't him that is seeing the doctor. He still benefits and gets a sucker and the nurses flirt with him.
So, we got a prescription of Augmentin and he will recheck his ears when we go for Preston's ONE YEAR check up on August 4th. Can't believe he is turning ONE next week!!!!

So Not Ready For Sleepless Nights!
I took Preston to see Dr. Morchower yesterday. I was on the fence as to whether or not to take him so I talked to the nurse. She suggested that I go ahead and bring him in since it was a Friday and he was still so fussy. The doctor said it was just a virus which I figured. But he also said that he was cutting his first molars. He has been such a great teether but those molars must really be bothering him!
I put him down last night at 7. He fussed every now and then until about 10 when he started crying hard. I got him up and rocked him. He went back down and was up again at midnight. I gave him a bottle and he went back to sleep until 3 or 4...I kinda lost track of the time. I tried to give him another bottle but he just wanted to play. I changed his jammies into fleece jammies thinking maybe he was cold. I put him back down close to 5 and he snoozed until 10 am!!
I think you block out how exhausting it is to get up through out the night. He would go to sleep on me while rocking him but wouldn't even lay down when I put him in his crib. I know at one point we both fell asleep in the glider. It does make it interesting considering I have a huge 31 week belly for Preston to lay on! :)
John had to take my minivan to the dealership for some maintenance this morning. So, he woke up early and took Carter with him. Carter had a great time! But the best part is I got to sleep in with Preston! I can't remember the last time I slept so late. Granted, I'm still sleepy but it was definitely nice to get those extra hours of sleep.
Preston woke up in a great mood this morning and is already back to himself. I hate seeing any of my babies sick and not feeling good, so it is so refreshing to see him playing today!
The past two nights, though, has just become a reminder of what's to come with a newborn. I can't wait to meet the little guy but I can definitely wait for the sleepless nights!!!

Sick Baby
We have been so lucky in the fact that Preston has only been sick twice in his first year. Carter was in daycare full time so it felt like he was always sick. Preston has only had two ear infections and even those were mild.
Yesterday, Preston woke up from his afternoon nap screaming. That is very unusual for him as he usually sits in there and talks to himself for a few minutes before the slightest fuss. I went in and picked him up and he felt warm. He had a very low grade fever. I don't give Tylenol unless the fever is 100.2 or higher and it was right around 99/100. He sat in my lap and wouldn't move from there. He laid his head down on me and we just sat. I thought maybe he had another ear infection or maybe he was teething. Then, after sitting there for about an hour, he threw up all over the place. I don't know where all of this food was being stored because there is no way his tummy is big enough for all of that. Maybe TMI but I'm still shocked. He was so scared as this was his first time to ever throw up. Then as we were cleaning it up it happened again. John took him and went to change his clothes as I went to change mine.
It has been a long time since we have been through this type of thing and I felt like a first time mom all over again. I didn't have a clue what to do next. Do I give him dinner? Do I give him his night time bottle? Do I put him to bed hungry? So frustrating!!
We all sat down for dinner and I put Preston in his highchair and gave him a sippy cup of water and a saltine cracker. He ate the cracker but definitely took his time with it. Towards the end of dinner though it happened again. Seriously...where did it all come from??? Luckily, this time it all landed in his tray and he had a bib on to catch everything.
We took him and gave him a bath and got him ready for bed. I sat with him on the couch while John and Carter went to the store. We had to restock on paper towels and lysol. He also picked up some pedialite. I gave Preston a bottle with 4 oz of pedialite and he quickly drank it. I put him down in his crib and he was out.
He woke up about 3:30 and I tried to give him more pedialite but he didn't want anything to do with it. I tried to put him to sleep in the pack n play in our room hoping he would sleep better next to me but that didn't work out. I took him in his room and we rocked. We rocked FOREVER! I have never been the type to rock my kids to sleep. I have actually done a great job in teaching both of my kids to put themselves to sleep. I never wanted them to depend on someone putting them to sleep. But last night was such a different story. He eventually started to drift but woke up as soon as I laid him down. I stood there and patted his back until he went to sleep again which was about 5:00 am.
He woke up this morning still with a slight fever but nothing big. He drank 4 oz of formula and has kept it down (knock on wood) so far. He still rubs his tummy so you can tell it is still bothering him. He did play for about 45 minutes on his own so that is an improvement.
He is currently down for his morning nap. When he gets up I 'm going to try to give him a little solid food but will stick to the BRAT diet for the day. He is supposed to have his one year old pictures down tomorrow and I really hope he is feeling better and we don't have to reschedule. I absolutely hate to see my babies sick and not feeling good!!

He is supposed to have his one year old pictures down tomorrow and I really hope he is feeling better and we don't have to reschedule. I absolutely hate to see my babies sick and not feeling good!!

Helping with the Dishes

Yay! More Teeth!
Preston now has 8 teeth!!! His eighth tooth finally cut through on the top. So, that makes 4 on the bottom and 4 on the top. He is a great teether! He hardly gets fussy and you wouldn't really know he was even teething. Huge difference in how Carter cut teeth. Carter always ran extremely high fevers and was absolutely miserable when he had new teeth coming in. I can't believe how big my "baby" is now getting!
Live Life Abundantly
John and I watched a Will Smith movie, 7 Pounds, a couple of weeks ago. It was an oddly great movie. It had a great message but was presented in an odd way. It really made me think about how we treat people in our daily lives and truly made me want to go out and do some good deeds for others and live my life abundantly!
While, watching the movie, my friend, Dana posted a blog of one of her friends, titled Choices. It really sums up my life right now and probably the lives for a lot of stay at home mom's. I have really been struggling with the idea of a new baby coming into our lives. As excited as I am to meet this little boy, I am super scared!! I even mentioned to John last night, when am I ever going to get a shower taken?? It seems like I am letting Carter watch a lot more TV than I used to in order to get things done around the house and even then I don't even feel like I am keeping up with the house and the things that need to be kept up with.
The Choices blog reminded me that I need to forget about the load of dishes that are in the dishwasher for just a little bit and take a little more time to play with my kids. I need to brave the heat for just 5-10 minutes and go outside and blow bubbles. I need to live abundantly!! I want to remember all of these days with my kids as great days and days of laughter and playtime and not days of being stressed out and worried. My kids aren't going to remember that the kitchen was a little dirty or their clothes weren't put away as soon as they were dry. But they will remember their mommy playing games with them and having fun with them.
Carter, Preston, and Baby, I promise from this day to live my days for you boys and play with you more and give you the mommy you so much deserve! I love all three of you so very much and I hope you will always know that!!
